What to consider before applying to post-secondary education

Applying to post-secondary education can be a hard decision. This decision will impact you for many years to come. Here are some of the things to consider before sending in your applications.

Academics

Consider what your interests are. A post-secondary program will help guide you into your future career. Consider all of your options and focus on choosing something you will enjoy.

Research what kind of programs are being offered. Make sure you have prerequisites and if possible, look into the courses you will be taking in the program. Need a class or two before heading to post-secondary? Our Secondary School staff can help!

Research program courses. Researching classes will give you a look into the specific topics and skills each program has to offer. Have a question about the classes, schedule or admissions? Reach out to the program coordinator, or consider attending an open-house or virtual presentation!

Location

Consider location before applying to school. Are you looking to branch out in a new city, or live close to home? If you want to explore new places, make sure to research on-campus housing or residence and off-campus options! Look into things like meal plans and rules for living in residence.

If you’re looking for a more budget-conscious option, consider living at home during your studies. SGEI offers post-secondary programming at our campuses in Fort Frances, Kenora and Sioux Lookout, Ontario!

Campus look and feel

Check out school websites and social media accounts to get a feel for the campus, culture and activities. Every school has so many different things to offer! Here at SGEI, we have designated areas for students to take time for themselves, work on their studies, eat lunch, and more. Make sure the schools you’re considering have dedicated spaces for the students to help them succeed.

Financial assistance

If you require financial assistance, research what options the school has and if they can help. At Seven Generations Education Institute, we have financial counseling as well as OSAP application assistance. For help, contact a program coordinator or learn more on our Financial Aid page.

Beyond the classroom

Consider what else is located around campus. Are there places to hang out with friends, get a part-time job, or engage in extra-curriculars? While education is important, look for a school with engaging student opportunities.

SGEI offers students a variety of free and engaging extra-curricular activities like yoga, traditional drumming, guest speakers, cultural workshops, land-based learning and more. Stay up to date with all of our events on our website’s Events Calendar.
