I’m Kailey, an Esthetician who graduated from Seven Generations Education Institute’s Esthetician Program with a diploma from Sault College in 2019. I am employed at Buck+Doe Beauty in Kenora and a Wellness Studio as an Esthetician and Salon Manager!
What drew me to SGEI’s Esthetician Program
I chose SGEI because it is local, which made it easier for many reasons, including being close to home. I also received OSAP, which helped me with my program.
Growing up, I was always drawn to beauty and makeup and watched YouTube makeup tutorials. I was a payroll administrator before I decided to take this course. I changed career paths at 29, so it’s never too late! I chose to pursue the Esthetician Program because I have always been interested in the beauty industry, and having this program in my hometown allowed me to pursue it. Throughout the program, you learn many different aspects to see what you like best and choose your specialization. My favourite thing to do is waxing, and getting a diploma in esthetics taught me so much. I was immediately drawn to waxing, which is why I took the course in the first place. It’s been a passion of mine ever since.
What I didn’t expect
Throughout the program, we touched a lot on health and safety. The health and safety aspects made me more confident in my services and able to identify potential contraindications of services. It was helpful to learn about medications like the ones that are skin thinning or if someone’s diabetic and how it can impact what products I can use. We also learned about sanitization and disinfectants and how different grades can sanitize different things properly.
Along with health and safety, I didn’t realize how in-depth the anatomy course would be. It was like learning a pre-med anatomy course, and I use it all the time! It was something I caught on to, and it was neat learning the different parts of the body, inside and outside. Our instructor Courtney was an excellent teacher, and she made it fun to learn it!
My career after SGEI
I specialize in waxing and lash extensions, although having the diploma and going to SGEI allowed me to learn in-depth about everything in the esthetics world. I chose to go into the field of work because I love working with people one-on-one and building client relationships. I’m very fortunate to be able to do this every day as my career and job, and I recommend it immensely.
Why you should pursue post-secondary education
Take the program. It teaches you the entire industry, and a hands-on course will allow you to find your love for it. It is not just about painting nails or learning makeup; it’s learning the proper procedures and how to use those skills outside the classroom. Thank you, SGEI, for allowing me to find my career!
