Many public libraries do not offer free library access to individuals outside their catchment area, for example those living in rural communities or on reserves. Because a large population of SGEI’s students don’t qualify for a free library card, we’ve partnered with various local libraries and organizations to provide our students with free library cards and equitable access to an extensive collection of eBooks, audiobooks, library services and community-based learning support.
Library cooperatives
The Rainy River District Library Cooperative (RRDLC) is a partnership that aims to enrich the lives of young people by providing free library access to students living in the Rainy River District. SGEI students that attend the Fort Frances campus can access free eBooks and audiobooks and physical resources at the following locations:
- Atikokan Public Library
- Emo Public Library
- Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre
The RRDLC was recently awarded the Minister’s Award for Innovation – Small Library category at the Ontario Public Library Awards. This prestigious award recognizes innovations in library service that positively contribute to a community and public libraries.
SGEI has also partnered with the Kenora Public Library to provide similar services to SGEI students attending school at our Kenora campus.
Getting your library card
Upon enrollment, SGEI students attending the Fort Frances campus receive an RRDLC library card. If you did not receive one or can’t remember your card number, contact our librarian Tanya Howarth at tanyam@7generations.org or (807) 274-2796 ext. 1216.
Students attending our Kenora campus can go to the Kenora Public Library and sign up for a free library card.
