Ozhitoodaa Wiigwaasi-jiiman (Let’s Build a Birchbark Canoe)

Experience the traditional art of birch bark canoe building through hands-on learning with experienced builders, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Anishinaabemowin speakers.

Participants will help build a canoe from bark preparation to launch while learning traditional skills, cultural teachings, and language connected to the land and waterways.

The week’s activities will conclude with a paddling opportunity on Sunday.

Registration is not required, but please RSVP to have lunch provided for your day and have an additional entry in a canoe readiness prize!

Tuesday, August 4

11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Opening Ceremony at 11:30

Lay out and bend up bark; prepare roots/other materials

Wednesday, August 5

9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Start sewing up bark, add gunnels, begin lashings; prepare roots/cedar

Thursday, August 6

9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Finish lashings; sew up ends; prepare and place ribs

Friday, August 7

9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Start cedar sheathing; scrafitto work; ribs/sheathing

Saturday, August 8

9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Finish ribs; finishing touches/scrafitto, pitching

Sunday, August 9

11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Launch Ceremony at 11:45 followed by lunch
