Ozhitoodaa Wiigwaasi-jiiman (Let’s Build a Birchbark Canoe)
Experience the traditional art of birch bark canoe building through hands-on learning with experienced builders, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Anishinaabemowin speakers.
Participants will help build a canoe from bark preparation to launch while learning traditional skills, cultural teachings, and language connected to the land and waterways.
The week’s activities will conclude with a paddling opportunity on Sunday.
Registration is not required, but please RSVP to have lunch provided for your day and have an additional entry in a canoe readiness prize!

Start sewing up bark, add gunnels, begin lashings; prepare roots/cedar |

Finish lashings; sew up ends; prepare and place ribs |

Start cedar sheathing; scrafitto work; ribs/sheathing |

Finish ribs; finishing touches/scrafitto, pitching |
