Course Objective: The objective of this course is to bring together students to discuss the prospect of Self Government for Indigenous peoples in Canada within the context of International legal norms.  The students will review International legal instruments, Canadian policy and law around self-government, and Grand Council Treaty #3 research and written information about the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3’s own laws and a formally considered path forward to self-government outlined in the year 2000.

Course description:  Aboriginal Self-Government in Canada within the context of International Law, examined through such instruments as the International Labor Organization’s convention on Indigenous peoples, United Nations Human Rights agreements and the domestic law of Canada.
