Anishinaabe wiigwaasi makokoonske: Anishinaabe making birch bark baskets

Join SGEI to learn how to make birch bark baskets with Elder Don Jones. Learn how to harvest your own birch bark, learn about the process and Anishinaabe customs, and create your own basket to take home with you. Patterns will be available for different styles of small and large baskets, and feather holders.  

Please bring tobacco, a food offering and a gift to give to the tree on the first day. Please dress for the weather. Lunch will be provided.

Schedule: 

  • Day 1: 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. Meet at SGEI Fort Frances campus at 9:30 am and travel to Cuttle Lake to harvest bark and other supplies, and learn about customs. Return to SGEI to start making baskets. 
  • Day 2: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Come to SGEI Fort Frances campus to create birch bark baskets.
