PROGRAM OVERVIEW

First Nation communities are currently undergoing major restructuring reforms in their educational settings. Principals as leaders of these schools must be aware of what these reforms mean to the community-based structures and work closely with the shared visions and initiatives.

Other related educational completion can be considered providing information is included with the application.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Part One: Principal As A Leader/Manager:

The framework of this course gives special attention on how school leadership pertains to First Nations community setting. It focuses on accountability, equity, excellence, and partnerships. Module topics include:

  1. What it means to be a Principal
  2. Interpersonal Skills and Decision Making
  3. Human Resources: Supervision of Staff
  4. Legal Issues Related to School Operations and Personnel
  5. Students with Exceptionalities

The Practicum:

A practicum will follow Part One/Part Two, during the 2008/09 school year.

On-site Practicum: The on-site component of the practicum will allow the candidate to experience a leadership role through a number of possible activities. Participants will present their Principal’s Portfolios in the second summer session. Suggested practicum activities may include one or more of the following:

  1. Curriculum development within the region, community or school;
  2. Staff professional development;
  3. Community development; or
  4. School Program and Planning

The practicum plan will be developed during part one of the program, to be implemented during winter 2003/04.

Part Two: The Principal’s role in facilitating change and growth in the First Nation School setting

Module topics include: Human Resources: Selection and Staff Development

Registrations must be received by April 30, 2008. Acceptance notices will be mailed out by May 14, 2008.

Please attach a separate letter to the Selection Committee stating your reasons for attending the course. Letters need to include the following:

  1. Your employment status (i.e. Principal, Vice-Principal, aspiring to be a Principal in a First Nation community, or other- please specify);
  2. First Nation community you are representing;
  3. Attach letter of approval for attending the course from you board of education or education authority; and
  4. Indicate 3 main areas of interest you hope to see in the program.
