Key Concepts: Preparation for Winter, Wild Rice, Nutrition

In this unit, some seasonal changes are discussed, such as hibernation and how people prepare for winter. The students learn about Wild Rice from identification to harvesting to cooking. They will access the nutritional value of Manoomin and put together a booklet or recipes. The unit features the book, "Last Leaf, First Snowflacke to Fall" by local artist Leo Yerxa. This book is used as a reference and is not for sale.

Key Concepts: Environmental studies from the First Nation Perspective, Arts, Traditional values, Aboriginal issues, and more.

This is a year long unit based on the four seasons that includes the traditional values and skills of Anishinaabe people.  Many seasonal activities are used for teaching the core curriculum areas of math, science, social studies, history, etc..  The unit includes a list of support materials and resources available through the Seven Generations Education Institute Library.
